WILLIAMSBURG - ATTRACTIONS & ACTIVITIES

Casemate Museum at Fort Monroe

Fort Monroe, recently designated as a National Monument, is the largest stone fort ever built in the U.S. Within the historic fort's stone walls is the Casemate Museum, which chronicles the history of the fort and the Coast Artillery Corps. During the Civil War, Fort Monroe was a Union-held bastion in the center of a Confederate state and helped shelter thousands of slave refugees. A highlight is the cell where Confederate President Jefferson Davis was imprisoned. Open year-round 10:30am-4:30pm. Closed Mondays October-April, open daily May-September. Closed Thanksgiving, Dec. 24, Dec. 25, and Jan. 1. Free.
